Most supermassive black hole growth is obscured by dust

چکیده
We present an alternative method to X-ray surveys for hunting down the high-redshift type-2 quasar population, using Spitzer and VLA data on the Spitzer First Look Survey. By demanding objects to be bright at 24 μm but faint at 3.6 μm, and combining this with a radio criterion, we find 21 type-2 radio-quiet quasar candidates at the epoch at which the quasar activity peaked. Optical spectroscopy with the WHT confirmed 10 of these objects to be type-2s with 1.4 ≤ z ≤ 4.2 while the rest are blank. There is no evidence for contamination in our sample, and we postulate that our 11 blank-spectrum candidates are obscured by kpc-scale dust as opposed to dust from a torus around the accretion disk. By carefully modelling our selection criteria, we conclude that, at high redshift, 50-80% of the supermassive black hole growth is obscured by dust.

Black Holes in Galaxy Mergers: Evolution of Quasars
Based on numerical simulations of gas-rich galaxy mergers, we discuss a model in which quasar activity is tied to the self-regulated growth of supermassive black holes in galaxies. The nuclear inflow of gas attending a galaxy collision triggers a starburst and feeds black hole growth, but for most of the duration of the starburst, the black hole is “buried”, being heavily obscured by surroundin...

We show that the luminosity function of the actively starforming Lyman break galaxies and the B-band quasar luminosity function at z = 3 can be fit reasonably well with the mass function of collapsed galaxy scale dark matter haloes predicted by viable variants of hierarchical cold dark matter dominated cosmological models for lifetimes tQ of the optically bright phase of QSOs in the range 10 to...

We demonstrate that the luminosity function of the recently detected population of actively star-forming galaxies at redshift three and the B-band QSO luminosity function at the same redshift can both be matched with the mass function of dark matter haloes predicted by standard variants of hierarchical cosmogonies for lifetimes of optically bright QSOs anywhere in the range 10 6 to 10 8 yr. The...
متن کاملNuSTAR OBSERVATIONS OF WISE J1036+0449, A GALAXY AT z∼1 OBSCURED BY HOT DUST
Hot, Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs), selected from the WISE all sky infrared survey, host some of the most powerful Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) known, and might represent an important stage in the evolution of galaxies. Most known Hot DOGs are at z > 1.5, due in part to a strong bias against identifying them at lower redshift related to the selection criteria. We present a new selection met...

We will briefly discuss the importance of sensitive X–ray observations above a few tens of keV for a better understanding of the physical mechanisms associated to the Supermassive Black Hole primary emission in both radio quiet and radio loud AGN and to the cosmological evolution of the most obscured sources.
